The ocean regions are divided into four major zones:
- Intertidal-Where the ocean meets the land. Ex. rocky coastlines, beaches, and shores
- Pelagic-Waters further from land. Ex. open oceans
- Benthic-Below Pelagic area, but does not include the ocean floors. Ex. deep oceans
- Abyssal-Bottoms of oceans. Ex. ocean floors
All four zones have a great diversity of species. People say the ocean has the highest diversity of species on Earth. We've never truly seen the bottom of the ocean, so it possibly could be true.
There are 3 distinct levels of biodiversity:
There are 3 distinct levels of biodiversity:
- Species diversity: This is the different kinds of species of organisms and how they interact
- Genetic diversity: The different types of genes within a species such as mutations and gene exchanges that occur at DNA level and generate evolution.
- Ecosystem diversity: The different genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity of an ecosystem. This is the different kinds of interactions between the different species and their immediate environment.
